How to pass a prop firm challenge
Founder of TradeStack. Builds the importer and reviews every broker export format by hand.
Size every trade so a full losing streak can't hit the daily loss or max drawdown, cap trades per day, stop after a set daily loss well inside the firm's limit, and let the profit target come slowly. Journal every evaluation trade so you know your numbers before you pay for the next one.
Read the rules as numbers
Write down the profit target, daily loss limit, max drawdown, whether the drawdown trails (intraday or end-of-day), minimum trading days and any consistency rule. Each one is a hard line your plan has to stay inside.
Work backwards from the drawdown
Decide how many losing trades in a row you must be able to survive, then divide the drawdown by that number. If the max drawdown is $2,500 and you want to survive ten straight losses, risk at most $250 per trade, and less if the drawdown trails.
Set your own daily stop inside the firm's
Stop trading for the day at roughly half the firm's daily loss limit. Breaching the daily limit ends the account; your own earlier stop ends only the session.
Don't rush the target
A challenge with no time limit rewards patience. Trading bigger to finish faster is the most common way evaluations are lost. Spread profit across days so a consistency rule doesn't hold up your payout.
Journal the evaluation separately
Keep each evaluation in its own portfolio so its drawdown, win rate and expectancy aren't mixed with other accounts. After a failed attempt, the journal shows exactly which rule broke and which setups cost the most.
Frequently asked
Why do most traders fail prop firm challenges?
Usually by hitting the daily loss or trailing drawdown rule after oversizing or revenge trading, not by failing to reach the profit target.
How much should I risk per trade in an evaluation?
Small enough that a long losing streak stays inside the max drawdown. Many traders aim for a fraction of a percent of the account per trade.
Can I track my prop firm rules in TradeStack?
Yes. Import your platform CSV into a separate portfolio per account and TradeStack shows daily P&L, drawdown, win rate and expectancy for that account, free.
